1958 Mid Century Modern Then and Now

 Piedmont, CA

We attended this estate sale in 2012.

One of the most memorable sales! This house is located in the affluent Piedmont hills. The house was in amazingly pristine condition. It was so clean! And there were lots of fantastic things for sale too! I think we went back everyday they were open and kept on buying cool things. We even went back the day after the last day of the sale and to our luck they had put lots of stuff out on the curb for the garbage! We rummaged through the pile and got a ton of old 78's, some vintage ephemera and all of their amazing Kodachrome slides! Those slides are my favorite things I got from this house because they were mostly from the 60s and many of them were taken at the house so I was able to create this awesome before and after post of this stunning home!

2012 Vs. 1967
Of course a house of this stylish magnitude had an amazing front door! I found it interesting they swapped out the escutcheon at some point! Both are super great! Also, this is the lady of the house. She had quite the eye for great style, as you will see in her outfits and decor of her home.

A close up of the escutcheon. We have not seen this particular one before.

2012 Vs. 1962
This is a small court yard just off the dining room and near the front door. Here you can see the bland color scheme of today. It looks that the panels were some kind of fiberglas.

1962 Vs. 2012
The backyard is exactly the same!
Also, a few of these "after" photos are from the real estate listing, like the one here.

 2012 Vs. 1966
At some point they took out that amazing room divider between the living and dining rooms.

1962
Here is the man of the house. Both the husband and wife had great style! Also here's a better view of the room divider and cool lights. The dining room had a matching chandelier that you will see.

Same drapes! And that floor lamp was at the sale. We kick ourselves for not buying it. :(

All the walls were covered in that grasscloth wallpaper. They still were when we were here at the sale but they were painted white. Blah.

1961
Here is the dining room with extra cool chandelier that matched the lights in the entry. The lights were not there at the sale, there was a crystal chandelier in the dining room. We tried looking for them in the basement at the sale but it was a no go.

1962 Vs 2012
This was the family room. The wood paneling was still unpainted in here, but appeared to be restainted in the 80s or 90s. Also, those Mid Century Modern wall hangings showed up at the local antique fair the next weekend. Im sure they were from this house. Another thing that slipped through our fingers.

1966
The eat in kitchen. Gotta love that poodle napkin holder!

Notice that the gold lamp is the same one in one of the pictures of the fireplace wall, just has a different shade.

  5. browse around here Usually the install can be done with relatively moderate skills and simple tools like a chop saw and rented flooring nailed. The finishing process is a browse around here whole different matter. The sanders and buffers take some special skills to operate. A normal price range for labor and materials to install a wood floor.
